Every founder who ships a product eventually says some version of the same sentence: we use this ourselves, every day. It costs nothing to say, fits in a single tweet, and sounds like the strongest kind of endorsement a company can give itself. It has also stopped doing much work, because almost nobody can check it, and audiences have gotten good at discounting claims they cannot verify.
The claim and the proof are different things
“We dogfood our own product” is a claim about internal behavior that customers have no window into. A customer reading it has exactly as much reason to believe it as to disbelieve it, which is to say none at all, because the sentence carries no evidence inside it. That is not a reason to stop using your own product. It is a reason to stop expecting the sentence alone to do any persuading.
What makes it checkable instead of quotable
The founders who get real credit for this do something more specific than announce it. They let a support ticket from the founder’s own account surface in a public changelog. They mention, in passing and with the actual detail intact, the exact bug their own usage caught before a customer did. They show the product being used for a real, nameable internal task, not a staged screenshot of a dashboard. None of that is more work than writing the original claim. It is just the difference between a sentence anyone could write and a detail only a real user would know.
The version that backfires
The bigger risk is the founder who says it anyway, without ever having to prove it, and gets caught out later - a former employee, a candid customer call, a journalist who asks one follow-up question. At that point the cost is not just losing the credibility the claim was supposed to buy. It is retroactively discrediting every other unverifiable thing the company has said, because audiences update on pattern, not on isolated statements.
Using your own product is still worth doing, for the product’s sake as much as anything else. Just stop expecting the line about it to carry weight the facts behind it were never asked to earn.
