Mamaearth: A Trustworthy Brand Born from Deep Parental Concern for Safe and Natural Care

Indian skincare has taken new turns after the launch of Mamaearth; cruelty-free and safe products are now being made extensively. The story begins in 2016 when Ghazal Alagh and Varun Alagh were blessed with a newborn baby, and then the search for safe baby care products begins. They then realized that all of the baby care products here in India were not that safe, natural, and cruelty-free, and that’s when they decided to start their own venture called “MamaEarth.”

How It All Started

Varun and Ghazal didn’t start Mamaearth as businesspeople looking to tap into a new market. They started it as concerned parents. When they couldn’t find baby products that were free of harmful chemicals, they began researching what made skincare products safe. They wanted to find ingredients that were good for the skin and free from toxins like parabens and sulfates, which can be harmful over time. After months of hard work and research, they developed their own range of products that were natural, safe, and gentle enough for babies.

The Vision Behind Mamaearth

From the very beginning, all Mamaearth wanted was to provide products that were safe, toxin-free, and made with natural ingredients. The brand made sure to avoid harmful chemicals like parabens, sulfates, and artificial fragrances in all of its products. Mamaearth also became the first brand in Asia to offer products that were certified by Made Safe, which guarantees that the products are non-toxic.

The founders wanted to make a skincare brand that people could trust completely. Varun, with his background in the FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) industry, brought the business expertise to the table. Ghazal, with her creative and innovative mindset, focused on product development. Together, they built a brand that not only offered natural, safe products but also connected deeply with the values of parents and consumers.

Rapid Growth and Success

Mamaearth’s growth was impressive. In just three years, the brand crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in revenue, which is a remarkable achievement for a company so young. One of the key reasons for this success was the brand’s commitment to offering products that truly met the needs of consumers. They identified a real-world problem and are trying hard to solve it every day.

For example, they didn’t just stop at baby products. They expanded their range to include skincare, haircare, and wellness products for adults, all made with the same care and attention to safety. Customers appreciated the transparency of the brand — they knew exactly what they were getting with Mamaearth, and they trusted that the products were safe and effective.

Financial Milestones

In 2023, Mamaearth took a big step by launching its Initial Public Offering (IPO). From October 31 to November 2, 2023, the company opened its shares for subscription, with each share priced between Rs 308 and Rs 324. By the end of the IPO, the company aimed to raise Rs 1,701 crore, which valued Mamaearth at Rs 10,425 crore. This was a huge moment for the brand, showing how far it had come in just a few short years.

By the fiscal year ending in March 2024, Mamaearth’s revenue had reached Rs 1,920 crore, with a 28.7% growth year-on-year. These numbers reflect the trust that consumers have placed in the brand, as well as the hard work and dedication of the founders and their team.

Facing Competition

Despite its success, Mamaearth faces tough competition in the personal care market. Large multinational companies like Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, and Unilever have long been dominant players in the industry. Additionally, Indian brands like Himalaya and newer startups are also competing for the same audience.

However, Mamaearth stands out because of its commitment to safety, natural ingredients, and eco-friendly practices. The brand has also taken significant steps toward sustainability. For example, Mamaearth is one of the few Indian companies to actively engage in plastic recycling efforts. This dedication to protecting the environment has helped Mamaearth build a loyal customer base that appreciates both the products and the company’s values.
